This is an early simple soda bread recipe. Similar to what many Irish ate throughout the 2nd half of the 19th century

Ingredients

  • 3 cups soft wheat fresh wheat flour or AP
  • 1 cup AP flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 Cups buttermilk
  • 1 Cup raisins

Instructions

  • Pre-heat oven to 450°F. Mix all ingredients. Kneed briefly. Shape into round. Cross the top with the back of a knife. Place in oven on a sheet pan. Reduce temperature to 400°F. Bake for 15-25 minutes.
